Obituary for Robert Dewitt Allaben

It is with great sadness that the family of Robert Allaben, MD announces his passing on March 15, 2018 at the age of 87. Bob greatly loved, and was loved by his entire family, which includes his wife Joan, three children (Elizabeth, Janet, Bruce), four step-children (Deborah, Karyn, George, Robert), 13 grandchildren and one great-grandson. Also surviving are his brother, Lawrence and John Randolph (Randy) Allaben, and his first wife, Ruth Six Allaben.
He was preceded in death by his sister, Dorothy Talbert.

Bob took special delight in his grandchildren when they were babies; if there was a baby in the room, Bob was holding it. His pride and enjoyment of his grandchildren only strengthened as they grew older.

Bob was a dedicated surgeon and teacher of medicine, and was highly respected by his patients and the medical community. He was one of the first kidney transplant surgeons in Michigan. He devoted much of his energy to the improvement of medicine via teaching at Wayne State University, and was very involved at the local, state and national levels through organizations including the American Medical Association, the Michigan State Medical Society, and the American College of Surgeons.

Bob was an avid traveler, and can proudly say that he visited all seven continents. He shared his time between Michigan and Tennessee, making close friends in both. Unlike most people, Bob loved to spend the winter in Michigan.

Bob gave his all to his marriage and his family and to everything that he did, be it surgery, home maintenance, flying his plane, computer work and, finally, his hard-fought battle with cancer.

Those who so desire may make memorial donations in memory of Bob to the Wayne State University School of Medicine Scholarship Fund,Office of Gift Processing, 5700 Cass Avenue, Suite 1200, Detroit, MI 48202 (notation on memo line of check: IMO ALLABEN-SOM Scholarships) or online at: go.wayne.edu/give-medicine or to the University of Tennessee Cancer Institute – Research Endowment, Development Office, 2121 Medical Center Way, Suite 110, Knoxville, TN 37920.

A memorial service will be held on Monday, March 19, 2018 at 7:00 p.m. in the McGill Click Chapel, Loudon, TN. The family will receive friends from 6-7 PM Monday prior to the service at McGill Click Funerals & Cremations. Another memorial service will be held in Michigan later in the year.
