Obituary for Arthur Ray Flint

Arthur Ray Flint of Lenoir City passed away Friday, January 25, 2019, at the age of 75. Eagle Scout, Mason, Navy veteran, Art embodied the highest principles and lived a life of service to his family, his community, and his country. Direct descendent of the McCoy’s of Eastern Kentucky, Art was born and raised in Columbus, OH, and remained a die-hard Buckeye. Following HS graduation, he enlisted in the US Navy and served on the USS Wittek, the first destroyer in and the last one out of the Cuban blockade. After an honorable discharge from the Navy, as his young family was growing, he earned a BS in Business Administration and a Masters in Personnel Management, all the while working as a Personnel Manager, then Operations Manager, for Lazarus – a large Midwest, Columbus-based retail chain – plus serving in the National Guard, and leading a Scout troop. Desiring more time for his family than retail allowed, he went to work for Xerox Corporation, first as a technician, then as a Field Service Manager, both of which allowed him to fully employ his many talents and people skills for 25 years in Ohio and Indiana.
Camping in all kinds of weather, boating, hunting/fishing, football, and playing trombone in his high school dance band were all passions in the earlier years, eventually giving way to golf, photography, woodworking, target shooting, hikes in his beloved Smoky mountains, reading, ham radio, music, and all kinds of educational programs. He also spent several years ensuring veterans’ graves in several Loudon County cemeteries were marked with flags on Memorial Day and assisted with the procurement of memorial footstones when appropriate. But the priority always remained his children and grandchildren and whatever they were involved in at any given time: sports activities, scouting, school concerts/plays, learning to drive, etc.
Art is preceded in death by his parents, Ralph Donald and Virgie (Tussey) Flint. He is survived by Jan, his loving wife of 28 years; his 3 children, Derrick (Beth) Flint of Middlebury, IN; Susan (Steve) Pippin of Lenoir City, TN; and Russell (Jeri) Flint of Apache Junction, AZ; and his sisters, Connie Fyffe of Grove City, OH, and Rosemary (Rick) Dwyer, of DeLand, FL. He never tired of spending time with his four incomparable grandchildren: Javier “Alex” Flint (also an Eagle Scout), Nicole “Nikki” (Mike) Nagle, Autumn Rose Pippin, and Conner Michael Pippin. Friends who had a very special place in his heart include Doug Peterson (WI), and Tom Badgett and Dmitri Lolis, both of TN.
There are no services planned for Art Flint at this time, but a Celebration of Life will be held later this spring.
